Hiero Day is the annual festival that Hieroglyphics Imperium throws in their home city of Oakland, California. Since its launch in 2012, it’s grown from a local celebration into one of the Bay Area’s most beloved summer music events — drawing around 8,500 fans each year for a full-day celebration of golden age hip-hop, West Coast culture, and Oakland community.
If you’ve never been, 2026 is the year to go. Here’s everything you need to know.
What Is Hiero Day?
Hiero Day is simultaneously a music festival, a family reunion, a cultural event, and a homecoming. It’s held annually in the late summer in Oakland — the city that shaped Hieroglyphics and where many of the artists still live and work.
The festival features the full Hiero roster performing across the day, with special guests from across hip-hop history. The vibe is celebratory and communal — less like a traditional festival with stages designed to move bodies between sponsors, more like a block party thrown by people who actually care about the community it serves.
The History: 2012 to Now
Hiero Day began in 2012 as a relatively modest event — a thank-you to Oakland fans who had supported the collective through decades of independent grind. The response from the community was overwhelming. The second and third editions grew substantially, and by the mid-2010s, Hiero Day had become a fixture on the Bay Area summer calendar.
Key Hiero Day moments over the years:
- The first festival in 2012 — a declaration that Hiero was still here and thriving
- The 5th anniversary edition (2017) brought expanded programming and special guests
- Post-pandemic returns in 2022-2023 reconnected the community after years apart
- 2025’s edition featured 8,500+ attendees and special anniversary performances
What You’ll See at Hiero Day 2026
Hiero Day 2026 will feature the full collective performing throughout the day. Expect:
- Souls of Mischief — Tajai, A-Plus, Opio, and Phesto in their element
- Del tha Funkee Homosapien — solo material and collective cuts
- Casual — one of underground hip-hop’s most underrated lyricists
- Pep Love, Domino — solo sets from the extended crew
- DJ Toure — holding down the decks and keeping the energy
- Special guests — Hiero Day has a history of bringing out Bay Area legends and hip-hop icons
Getting to Hiero Day: Oakland Logistics
Flying in: Oakland International Airport (OAK) is the most convenient option. It’s closer to the festival site than SFO and Bay Area traffic from SFO can be brutal. BART from OAK airport to downtown Oakland runs regularly.
Driving: If you’re driving, allow extra time for Oakland traffic. Arriving early eliminates most headaches. Rideshare services run well in Oakland but expect surge pricing post-show.
BART: Oakland has excellent BART coverage. The 19th Street or 12th Street/City Center stations put you close to the festival area. Check the exact venue when tickets go on sale for the closest station.
