Hieroglyphics Imperium is a 100% artist-owned independent hip-hop collective and record label founded in Oakland, California in 1995. Built on the principles of creative independence, artistic ownership, and community, Hiero has become one of the most respected institutions in West Coast underground hip-hop over three decades of consistent output.

The collective is anchored by Del tha Funkee Homosapien — one of hip-hop’s most distinctive voices and the founder of the Hiero movement — alongside Souls of Mischief (Tajai, A-Plus, Opio, and Phesto), Casual, Pep Love, Domino, and DJ Toure.

Landmark releases include 93 ’til Infinity (1993), Souls of Mischief’s debut and one of hip-hop’s most celebrated albums; 3rd Eye Vision (1998), the collective’s defining statement on independent label ownership; Deltron 3030 (2000), Del’s sci-fi concept album with Dan the Automator and Kid Koala; and Full Circle (2003). Today, Hiero draws approximately 245,000 monthly Spotify listeners and hosts the annual Hiero Day festival in Oakland, drawing crowds of ~8,500.

Hieroglyphics Imperium is a 100% artist-owned independent hip-hop collective and record label founded in Oakland, California in 1995. Over three decades, Hiero has built one of the most enduring legacies in West Coast underground hip-hop — not through major label infrastructure, but through an unwavering commitment to artistic ownership, creative freedom, and community.

The collective was born from the East Bay underground in the early 1990s, anchored by Del tha Funkee Homosapien, one of hip-hop’s most distinctive and influential voices. Along with Souls of Mischief (Tajai, A-Plus, Opio, and Phesto), Casual, Pep Love, Domino, and DJ Toure, Del forged a movement defined by intricate lyricism, jazz and funk-inflected production, and an unmistakable Oakland sensibility.

The label’s landmark debut, 93 ’til Infinity (1993) by Souls of Mischief, arrived as a fully-formed statement — its sun-soaked, laid-back boom-bap a stark contrast to the era’s dominant sounds, and an instant classic that endures to this day. 3rd Eye Vision (1998) marked the collective’s full arrival as a self-sufficient label and creative force, cementing their reputation for uncompromising artistry outside the major label system.

In 2000, Del’s Deltron 3030 — a collaborative concept album with producer Dan the Automator and turntablist Kid Koala — expanded the possibilities of hip-hop storytelling through science fiction and futurism, earning widespread critical acclaim and a devoted cult following. Full Circle (2003) and subsequent releases continued to expand the catalog, with Pep Love’s Acres of Diamonds (2025) representing the label’s continued output into the present decade.

Beyond recordings, Hiero has built a thriving live platform: the annual Hiero Day festival in Oakland draws approximately 8,500 fans and serves as a celebration of independent hip-hop culture and community. The 2026 touring calendar includes a landmark Red Rocks Amphitheatre show (June 20, Morrison, CO) alongside Cypress Hill, Method Man & Redman, and De La Soul.

With approximately 245,000 monthly Spotify listeners and a deeply loyal fanbase spanning multiple generations, Hieroglyphics Imperium stands as proof that artist-owned independent labels can sustain long-term careers and cultural relevance on their own terms — without compromise, and without ever leaving Oakland.
