Every major hip-hop collective has a visual identity. Wu-Tang has the W. Def Jam has the block logo. Death Row had the man in the electric chair. But Hieroglyphics has something older than all of them — an Egyptian eye, ancient and unmistakable, worn on clothing and spray-painted on walls from Oakland to Tokyo.
The Hiero eye is one of hip-hop’s most distinctive visual marks. Here’s where it came from and why it still resonates three decades later.
Why Egyptian Hieroglyphics?
The name Hieroglyphics isn’t arbitrary. When Del tha Funkee Homosapien and the Oakland crew formalized the collective in the early 1990s, they chose a name that reflected their approach to language: pictographic, layered, ancient, requiring translation to fully understand. Just as Egyptian hieroglyphics encoded meaning in symbols rather than phonetic letters, Hiero’s rhymes embedded meaning in multiple registers simultaneously.
The choice was also a statement about lineage. At a moment when hip-hop was fragmenting into regional scenes and commercial subgenres, claiming connection to an ancient African writing system was a way of asserting that Black culture — and Black artistic expression — had deep roots that predated the music industry, predated the record contract, predated every trend.
The Eye of Horus
The specific symbol the collective adopted — the stylized eye — draws from the Eye of Horus, one of ancient Egypt’s most powerful protective symbols. In Egyptian mythology, the Eye of Horus represented protection, royal power, and good health. It was used in amulets and was one of the most common symbols painted on the sarcophagi of pharaohs.
The Eye of Ra — a related symbol — represented the destructive and protective power of the sun god. In some contexts the two are interchangeable; both relate to vision, insight, and the ability to see what others cannot.
For an independent hip-hop collective built on lyrical complexity and independent vision, the symbolism was perfect. The eye sees. It perceives truth. It isn’t fooled by surface appearances. That’s precisely what Hieroglyphics music demands from its listeners: active perception, not passive consumption.
The Third Eye in Hip-Hop
Hiero wasn’t alone in drawing from this symbolic tradition. The Five Percenters — a spiritual movement originating in Harlem — had long used Egyptian and Islamic symbology to represent enlightenment and knowledge. Wu-Tang Clan drew from Five Percenter philosophy. Rakim’s imagery was built on it. Brand Nubian, Poor Righteous Teachers, and dozens of other early 1990s acts incorporated the Eye as a symbol of “third eye” consciousness: the ability to see beyond the material world and perceive deeper reality.
What made Hiero’s adoption distinctive was the regional specificity. This wasn’t just a New York phenomenon transplanted west — it was the Bay Area underground giving it a specifically Oakland inflection. The eye became inseparable from the city, from the culture Del and his collaborators built there.
The collective even named their 1998 album 3rd Eye Vision — a direct reference to this tradition of expanded perception.
The Logo on the Streets
By the mid-1990s, the Hiero eye had moved beyond album covers and t-shirts into something more autonomous: street art. In the Bay Area and in cities where the crew toured, fans and supporters started stenciling and spray-painting the eye on walls, underpasses, and street furniture. It became a marker — a way of saying we were here, we know what this is, we’re part of this.
This organic, grassroots propagation is rare for any brand — it means the symbol resonated deeply enough that fans wanted to claim it as their own, not just wear it on merchandise purchased at a show. The Hiero eye became a kind of subcultural tag, visible in street art traditions worldwide.
The Symbol Today
Thirty years on, the Hiero eye is more recognizable than ever. It appears on shophiero.com merchandise, on stage backdrops at Hiero Day, and on everything the crew releases. New listeners encountering the symbol for the first time often go looking for what it means — and they find a thirty-year catalog of music waiting for them.
