Every great collective needs someone who can hold the vision together without losing any of the creative energy that made the collective worth building. For Hieroglyphics, that person is Tajai.
Who Is Tajai?
Tajai Massey is a rapper, producer, executive, and founding member of both Souls of Mischief and the Hieroglyphics collective. He grew up in Oakland alongside A-Plus, Opio, and Phesto — the four teenagers who would release one of the most beloved hip-hop albums of all time before any of them had graduated high school.
But Tajai’s role in Hiero has always been larger than the mic. He thinks about the business, the strategy, and the long-term health of the collective as a 100% artist-owned independent enterprise. In a genre where artists routinely surrender their masters, publishing, and autonomy, Tajai has helped Hieroglyphics maintain full control for three decades.
The MC
Before the executive layer, there’s the rapper. Tajai’s style on the mic is muscular and intelligent — he writes verses that demand repeat listens. His cadence tends toward the declarative, which gives his lines a kind of authority that suits his role in the collective.
On 93 ’til Infinity, Tajai’s opening verse sets the temperature for the whole record. By the time A-Plus, Opio, and Phesto step in, the tone is already established: relaxed but sharp, confident but never arrogant. It’s a difficult balance and Tajai nails it. Listen to the album
Hieroglyphics Imperium
When the collective founded Hieroglyphics Imperium Recordings in 1995, Tajai was part of the leadership that made the independent bet possible. The label now represents one of the longest-running independent hip-hop operations in the country — artist-owned, artist-operated, no major label interference.
That independence is why the catalog is available for purchase directly through Bandcamp and at shophiero.com — every dollar goes closer to the artists who made the music.
Souls of Mischief
The group’s discography runs deeper than most fans realize. Starting with 93 ’til Infinity in 1993 and continuing through multiple full-length albums, Souls of Mischief has maintained a remarkably consistent level of quality across three decades. They never chased trends. They never needed to.
2026 Live Shows
Tajai performs with both Souls of Mischief and the full Hieroglyphics collective. Two must-see shows in 2026:
- Red Rocks 2026 — October 29, 2026, Morrison, CO — with Cypress Hill, Method Man and Redman, De La Soul
- Hiero Day 2026 — Oakland, CA — the annual homecoming festival with 8,500+ attendees
These are rare opportunities to see the complete collective live. Get tickets early.
