Biography
Born Teren Delvon Jones in Oakland, California, Del tha Funkee Homosapien is one of hip-hop’s most technically gifted and creatively adventurous MCs. A cousin of Ice Cube, Del burst onto the scene in 1991 with his debut album I Wish My Brother George Was Here — a coming-of-age classic that established his signature wit, wordplay, and refusal to compromise.
In 1995, Del co-founded Hieroglyphics Imperium Recordings alongside the rest of the Hiero crew, making history as one of hip-hop’s earliest and most successful fully artist-owned independent labels. The decision to go independent — walking away from major label money — became a blueprint for artist ownership that still resonates today.
In 2000, Del’s career reached global heights with the Deltron 3030 concept album (produced by Dan the Automator), a sci-fi epic that transcended hip-hop and earned him collaborations with Damon Albarn’s Gorillaz on “Clint Eastwood” and “Rock the House” — two of the biggest records of the 2000s.
